What if water isn’t the real worry?

John 4:9-10
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

  • If I Can Classify You, Then I Can Control You
    • I am a Samaritan; You Are A Jew
    • She attempted to compartmentalize him to prevent a conversation
    • She was closed off to communication
    • “What box do we attempt to put others in that causes us to ignore information before it’s even heard?”
    • Do we see a difference between who I think Jesus is and what Jesus is offering?
    • Jesus Is Bigger Than Our Boundaries
      • Do you want to solve race relations?
      • Do you want to solve the divorce dilemma?
      • Do you want to solve income inequality?
      • Do want to conquer our crime rate?

John 4:11
11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?

  • It’s Unbelievable
    • The proposition seems impossible
    • Because my mind can’t conceive it, I won’t believe it
    • The problem seems unsolvable
    • You Are Talking About Your Problems, God Is Talking About Your Purpose
    • What well are we standing at today believing incorrectly that the well is our barrier
      • What if water isn’t the real worry?
    • What greater vision is God trying to give to us?
      • Jesus can break through the barriers of what we have always thought
      • Jesus Can Expand Our Options
      • If You Don’t Need A Bucket, And Can Still Get This Water…
        • There Must Be More

John 4:12-15
12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” 13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

    • Don’t you dare cheapen the offer
    • That you would handle eternity in such selfish terms
    • That you would use his offer spiritual salvation for temporal satisfaction
  • Looks Can Be Deceiving
    • “Are you greater?”
      • He didn’t look greater
      • He was likely dirty and disheveled from the journey,, he didn’t smell greater
      • He didn’t have greater on his earthly person than Jacob had (a very wealthy man)
      • He wasn’t known for greater… There was no well named after Jesus
    • She keeps looking on the outside
    • If You Keep Looking On The Outside, You Will Keep Living On The Outside
      • On the outside of love
      • On the outside of life
      • On the outside of purpose
      • On the outside of passion
      • On the outside of help
      • On the outside of hope
    • “Are you greater?”
      • There were many ordeals that made him look ordinary on the outside
        • When he was betrayed
        • When he was arrested
        • When he was mocked as a king with a crown of thorns
        • When he made no defense against his foes
        • When they beat him to an inch of his life and strapped a splintered beam on my savior’s back.
        • When they nailed him to a cross between two criminals
        • Most of all, to the onlookers he looked normal as he gasped for his last breath and died.
        • The earthly story stumbles to its end in Joseph’s tomb
        • This is where the story ends and the glory begins
        • The outside story with a stone rolled in place was warring the inside glory waiting to be revealed.
        • On the third day, the glory story came forth and he looked the same but different…NOT ORDINARY
    • Everyone comes to God with a story on the outside
    • But… God Is Not Concerned With Story On The Outside, He Wants To Know, “Is There Glory On The Inside!?”
    • The Outside/Earthly Story Has To Die For the Glory Story To Begin
    • Are you greater?
      • Jesus Is Better Than Your Best
      • Jesus Is Greater Than your Greatest
      • Jesus Defeated Death, Hell And The Grave
      • “Yeah, I did”
