Praise Your Way Out

Praise Your Way Out

The thing he needed the most was the thing he was running from the hardest

Jonah 2:7
As my life was fading away,
I remembered the LORD.
My prayer came to You,
to Your holy temple.

  • His Life Was Fading
    • This reminded me of a scene in back to the future.
    • Marty Mcfly (Michael J. Fox) was fading because the life events that birthed his existence were now altered
    • The Slow Fade Was A Result Of Rearranged Choices
      • Jonah’s existence, “like Marty’s” was predicated on certain things being intact
      • People need to discover God’s purpose for their lives
        • The quest of answering our greatest existential question, Why are we here? What is my purpose
      • When we rearrange our purpose, we invite problems.
      • The light was fading, his strength was fainting
  • Don’t Go Down Without Fight
    • We must fight to remember, “I remembered the LORD”
    • We must guard our minds and grab the rope, God always gives us a lifeline
      • We Must Answer Anxiety With God’s Word
        • 1 John 4:18a “Perfect Loves Casts Out Fear”
        • God’s love will extinguish the fire of fear
      • We Must Learn How To Find Contentment In The Midst Of The Chaos

Philippians 4:11
Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.

        • We Must Discover Humility While We Are Hurting
          • “God help me”

Jonah 2:8
Those who cling to lying idols,
forsake faithful love,

  • You Can’t Have Them Both
    • You can’t say I will follow Jesus but I’m going to do it my way
    • You can’t say The Bible is God’s word, then live in disobedience
    • You can’t say you love God and hate people
    • You can’t say you value God’s church and choose to live in isolation
    • You can’t choose darkness and live in the light
    • You can’t be greedy and gracious
    • You can’t be continually contentious and be a person who loves peace
  • When I Embrace The Lies, I’m Forsaking Faithful Love
    • Jonah had entertained the notion he could do whatever he wanted and God would be okay with it
    • The Lies Won’t Lift Me Out Of Despair
    • The Lies Won’t Love Me When I Feel Alone
    • The Lies Can’t Listen To Me When Pray In Desperation
    • The thing he needed the most was the thing he was running from the hardest
  • Is The Thing I’m Holding On To Hurting Me Or Helping Me?
    • The little boy is running from something
    • The only reason he is running is because of what he is holding on to
    • All the little boy had to do was let go, lay the thing down and it would stop chasing him

Jonah 2:9-10
9 but as for me, I will sacrifice to You
with a voice of thanksgiving.
I will fulfill what I have vowed.
Salvation is from the LORD!
10 Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

  • Praise Will Set You Free
    • “I am going to praise my way out of this”
    • Only God can save
    • We have love him on the mountain top and in the valley
    • We have to love when we have the coat of many colors on and our dreams have us on top… and when we are betrayed and thrown in the dungeon
    • We have to love him after we have slain the giant with slingshot and a single stone, and when we are running from Saul
    • We have to love him when have done the right thing and it seems like people that are doing the wrong thing are more blessed
    • Praise Is Always The Way Out
      • Praise is always the forward,
      • Praise will steady your steps,
      • it will mentor your mindset,
      • it will call you to remember the Lord and return home to the father when you wandered far from his house

Psalm 46
1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come and see what the LORD has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
