Obedience Unlocks Overflow

Obedience Unlocks Overflow

Are the people closest to you receiving an overflow from your obedience?

Luke 5:5-7
5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.

  • Abundance Was Not The Result Of The Action Being Performed, Abundance Was The Result Of Obedience To The Word
    • The Action Is Irrelevant If The Heart Is Not Obedient
      • It’s not what you are doing
      • It’s the heart behind it
      • What if a spouse just did things to check a list but had no heart. It will feel empty.
  • Obedience Unlocks Overflow
    • The people that were closest proximity were blessed by Peter’s obedience
    • The people that had partnered with Peter were blessed by his obedience
    • Are the people closest to you receiving an overflow from your obedience?
    • Are people refreshed by their relationship with you?
    • Are people better off spiritually as a result of being near you?
    • Generational Overflow
      • Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph (saved the world from it’s suffering in hunger)
      • King David’s obedience collected the materials for the first House Of God.
        • So that his son, Solomon, could construct it
    • Freedom Overflow
      • Moses was able to get the people out of captivity
      • Joshua was able to get them into the promised land
    • Spiritual Overflow
      • The Obedience Of Jesus Opened The Possibility Of Heaven For Us

Philippians 2:8
And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

  • You Can’t Handle The Overflow
    • You Weren’t Meant To Keep It All
      • If they had tried to keep it all, they would have lost it all
      • Overflow Is Meant To Be Shared

Luke 5:8-9
8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken,

  • We Are Drawn In Our Spirit While Our Flesh Desires Distance
    • The Presence Of God Exposes Our Sin
    • Have you ever come to church and started feeling God speaking to you… and your only thought is,,“I need to get away! I need to run!”
    • Your flesh doesn’t want to change
    • Your flesh desires distance
    • But your spirit is drawn to Jesus, and find yourself falling at his needs feeling so unworthy of the blessing he has given you

Luke 5:10b
10b …And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

  • Empty Net Nights
    • We are tempted look at empty net nights as punishment.
    • This passage gives us an important principle, “The empty net night was not punishing Peter, it was pushing him towards his purpose.”
    • Obedience in the moment led to the next opportunity.
      • I heard good friend say recently, “When you don’t know what to do, you need to do the next right thing.”
  • Pushed Towards Purpose
    • If I can do this with these, imagine what I could do with those.
    • It was never about the fish.
    • There is more behind the blessing.
    • In the end, the blessing was all about people, people being saved from their sin, given grace for their guilt,
    • God Is Pushing Us Towards Purpose
    • “I know who you are and I love you anyway.”
    • “I know what you are and I want you anyway.”
