Love Over Hate

Love Over Hate

If we want to change the fruit, we have to change the root.

Genesis 4:6-8
6 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry(furious)? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” 8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

  • Hate Leads To Hurt
    • Something inside Cain was broken
    • He projected the brokenness inside him onto someone completely innocent
    • God warned him that sin was crouching and desired to have him

1 John 4:20a
If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar.

    • Racism is the fruit, sin is the root
    • If we want to change the fruit, we have to change the root
    • The Enemy Keeps Running The Same Play
    • Isolate, Divide, Defeat
      • This plan works on all levels
        • Racial tension
        • Corona
        • Marriage
        • Friendships
    • We Can’t Give In – “you must rule over it”
      • We need a power in us greater than the power of sin
      • It isn’t enough to identify the problem, to post about the problem, to burn things down about the problem, I think we need to offer solutions

Luke 10:29-37
29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus took up the question and said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion. 34 He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back I’ll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” 37 “The one who showed mercy to him,” he said. Then Jesus told him, “Go and do the same.”

  • Love Has To Do Something
    • Love can’t just walk by
    • Love feels something for the hurting “he had compassion”
    • Love does something about it
    • Love gives up comfort and is willing to walk so that someone else can ride
    • Love is generous with their money so that others can recover and be healed at no cost to them
  • Some Have Forgotten Their Forgiveness

2 Peter 1:5-9
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins
