Legacy Leadership

Legacy Leadership

Do we ever need to stand up one more time and find our way to God?

1 Samuel 1:1,2
1. “There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Penny had children, but Hannah had none.”

  • When There Is A Backstory
    • The Backstory makes THE STORY so much better!
    • Samuel became the great prophet who played a large role in the anointing of King
    • Samuel became the man of God he was, due to the devotion of his mother, Hannah
    • Born into a family of great legacy, (His Dad a descendant of Joseph!)
    • All this legacy, and it all came down to his Mother
    • Hannah is one of two wives to a successful and godly man
    • The family pedigree speaks for itself
    • But what a family dynamic
      • One man. Two wives. ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS!

1 Samuel 1: 3-5
“3 Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the LORD Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the LORD. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Penny and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the LORD had closed her womb.”

  • When Someone Is Pushing Your Buttons
    • You know what it means for someone to push your buttons?
      • Instant Reaction to Something That Irritates You?
      • Mama Bear Anger when someone comes against your child?
      • Personality Conflicts – you find you struggle with a certain personality type
      • Mean Girls – nothing worse than mean girls!
    • Mean Girl Situation
      • Penny is blessed with lots of children
      • Hannah has none
        • The Lord is working here…don’t miss it
          • V.5 “The Lord had closed her womb.”
          • YOU’VE BEEN WAITING ON GOD. YOU’VE ASKED FOR SOMETHING HE STILL HASN’T GIVEN YOU, MAYBE A CHILD, MAYBE SOMETHING ELSE
          • GOD IS WORKING
          • JUST GIVE HIM THE SPACE TO DO WHAT HE IS DOING
          • GIVE IT SOME TIME
      • Penny is mean
        • She “provokes” Hannah for the express purpose of irritating her (v.6)
        • Taunts and teases and belittles her to the point of real tears
        • Affects her health, can’t eat. (v.7)
    • When Something Is Beating You Down
      • Beat down by one emotional blow after another
      • By hurtful words / constant rejection / the ache of longing
        • “You will never be good enough.”
        • “You will always be a failure.”
        • “You can’t give him what I can give him.”
      • She’s been in the same place for years – YEARS
      • She has asked God for a child. Just one. ONE
      • And year after year she is discouraged and disheartened
        • EVERYTHING HANNAH IS ASKING GOD FOR
        • HE SEEMINGLY KEEPS GIVING TO OTHERS AROUND HER
  • When Alternate Realities Are Always Available
    • HOW WE HANDLE THE HURT WILL DETERMINE OUR REALITY
      • We need perseverance to push through
        • What if she had no perseverance?
        • What if Hannah had decided to let all this disappointment defeat her?
        • What if she decided she just couldn’t keep doing this?
        • WHAT WOULD HAPPEN THEN?
      • We can’t let emotions do all the driving
        • What if she got hooked on the wrong feeling?
        • What if she decided she was too angry with God to ask again?
        • What if she was too jealous? Too bitter?
        • WHAT WOULD HAPPEN THEN?
      • We can’t let past results affect our present effort
        • What if she let the past determine her future?
        • What if Hannah stopped believing?
        • What if she stopped going to Shiloh to meet with God because nothing ever worked out for her?
          • REMEMBER – The very thing she keeps asking for, He keeps giving to her biggest rival
        • What if she got to the point where she was DONE?
          • WHAT WOULD HAPPEN THEN?
          • OH MY FRIEND – THAT WE WOULD NOT GIVE UP WHEN OUR STORY IS STILL BEING WRITTEN!
          • GOD IS WORKING ON IT!

1 Samuel 1:9a
“Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up.”

  • When You Need To Get Up One More Time
    • ONE MORE TIME SHE STANDS UP
      • She finished dinner, and she stood up
        • In resolve and Spirit-led determination, she stands to her feeT
        • SHE STANDS UP BECAUSE SHE’S ABOUT TO BOW DOWN!
        • Do we ever need to stand up one more time and find our way to God?

1 Samuel 1:10-11
10 In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the LORD, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow, saying, “LORD Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”

James 5:16b
“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

    • ONE MORE TIME SHE BOWS TO PRAY
      • Same Worship
      • Same Speaker
        • The Same Setting Doesn’t Restrict The Possible Result
        • It’s Always About The Heart
        • The Heart to Stand Up In Order To Bow Down ONE MORE TIME!

1 Samuel 1:19a & 20a
B. 19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the LORD and then went back to their home at Ramah. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel.”

    • When Legacy Leadership Lives On
      • Hannah’s prayer is finally answered
      • Her son is committed to God
      • A lifelong commitment that will set him apart from others
      • A life of holiness, where great sacrifice ushers in great moves of God
      • Samuel will become judge, priest and prophet in Israel
      • He will establish the greatest King the world has ever known – King David
      • And King David will establish the nation of Israel on the world stage
      • And David’s lineage will see the birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ, who will be born to die as a sacrificial lamb for the sins of the world
      • For You and For Me / For The Church / For the 107!
  • Conclusion
    • We Must Pray One More Time
    • We Must Push One More Time
    • We Must Persevere One More Time
    • And God Will Open That Which Is Closed
      • He will Bless Legacy Leadership
      • He will Answer The Cry Of Your Heart
