Guard The Deposit

Guard The Deposit

Let’s recall. Let’s get back to basics.

Lamentations 3:21
Yet this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope

2 Timothy 1:14
Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us
  • ACTIVE, NOT PASSIVE
    • “Guard the good deposit”
      • To Guard: protect, oversee, defend
      • Football analogy: if you aren’t in a defensive stance, you’ll get killed out there
      • The defender is armed with strategies and plays
      • Looking to the coach for what’s next
    • “That was entrusted to you”
      • Entrusted: assigned responsibility, put in the care of
      • Insecurity doesn’t matter, still have a job to do
    • “Guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us”
      • Who is the Holy Spirit?

John 14:26
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

  • Salvation: the moment you understand all the Jesus has done, His love and grace, and invite Him into your life
    • Ephesians 1:13b “When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.”
    • 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 “Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.”
  • Spiritual Growth: from the active and ongoing relationship you have with the Holy Spirit
    • You can’t guard the deposit by yourself
    • You can’t defend the things of the spirit with human resources
  • The purpose of the Spirit
    • To develop Christlike character
    • To equip you for ministry and calling
    • To bring hope to the world around you

2 Peter 1:5-8
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
